What is Evo-OS?
- Evo-OS (ee-vos) or Evolution Operating System is a web-based operating system that strives to provide a desktop-like environment that is customizable and expandable just like your own computer desktop. The big difference between Evo-OS and your desktop is that all information stored on your Evo-OS desktop is kept on an online server. Simply put, you can access all of your files and your desktop (including all its applications) from anywhere in the world. All you need is an Internet connection and a browser (any will do). Evo-OS is not based on Linux, Windows or Mac OSX but it can mimic the look and feel of these operating systems to help make your Evo-OS experience as comfortable as possible.
Benefits
- While many may call Evo-OS or most web-based operating systems nothing more than "glorified file storage", a web-based operating system is so much more... It does not require you to install any programs on your computer, and does not take up any hard drive space. It offers the ability to browse the Internet, write documents, do spreadsheets, download and enjoy media files all within ANY browser, ANYWHERE.
- Going on an important trip? Or just going to school? Did you forget that important assignment that's now stuck on your desktop at home? If you compose and/or store your files on Evo-OS, you can access and edit them from any PC! All you need is an Internet connection, the software (or lack thereof) on whatever PC you're using has no impact on the Evo-OS systems capabilities because they are stored on a remote server and always available.
- Evo-OS is based off eyeOS, a very powerful platform for web-based operating systems which allows Evo-OS to work in all the most popular browsers such as Internet Explorer 6/7, Firefox, Safari, Konquror and Opera. Evo-OS is also fully mobile capable, use your Evo-OS on your iPhone or any other Internet capable cellphone that can render HTML and Javascript.
- Seamless... no need for constant refreshes, Evo-OS grabs information dynamically. One of the many ways Evo-OS helps create a true desktop feel.
- Avoid data loss. Does your PC crash? Are you using an unsecure system? Evo-OS is maintained within a browser session, if the PC crashes no data is lost, it's stored on a remote server. Just log back in and away you go.
- Consolidate your work without having to send files between multiple PC's, write your documents, spreadsheets, mail or create/download media to Evo-OS and just move to any other PC to continue your previous work. No downloads, no transfer, no need for FTP, or mail attachements.
- Enjoy the same applications, regardless of environment, in the same open system. Forget about compatibility problems such as issues between Office documents and differing Operating Systems.
- Share resources easily and quickly between different work centers of a same company, or working from different places and countries in the same projects.
- It's FREE. There are no licensing fees required for any of the software included in Evo-OS.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
- Evo-OS, like all other web-based operating systems is dependant on an available Internet connection, without such a connection you will not be able to access your Evo-OS desktop. However, the current proliferation of the Internet is making this point slowly null. Evo-OS can always be accessed at an Internet cafe if you are without a PC during a crucial time.
- Evo-OS SHOULD NOT be used for the storage of SENSITIVE information, such as corporate documents, and other sensitive information. We cannot guarantee that if a server compromise were to occur, that your data would be safe. We do take steps to ensure your information is kept confidential and private.
- Evo-OS issues each user a hard drive storage limit (on our server) because you are sharing a server with multiple users you will not enjoy vast amounts of hard drive space that you may come to expect on a PC (eg. 100+GB) however we do strive to provide a reasonable amount (1.5-2+GB).
- Always try to keep a back-up of any work you have stored on Evo-OS. While the servers are very stable, it is always GOOD PRACTICE to keep a back-up of your most important documents in case of any unforeseen circumstances. This is a practice that should be applied to any PC, regardless of its nature.
